TRENTON - A bill making its way through the State House asks for an increase in the age to buy cigarettes in New Jersey to 21.
Currently, customers must be 19 years old to purchase tobacco products.
Assembly Democrats point to data that shows people become most addicted to nicotine between the ages of 18 and 21.
New York is also considering a law to raise the legal age for buying cigarettes.
In the U.S., no one younger than 18 can buy cigarettes, according to federal law.
