NUTLEY - The community of Nutley has begun spraying a chemical at a local park to repel birds.

Neighbors near DeMuro Park say flocks of starlings are becoming a burden on residents and property.

The chemical is used to flavor candies and soda but is painful to birds. Authorities say the sensation is similar to that of pepper spray to humans.

"It's not going to harm the bird, it's going to irritate them and hopefully move them from this area to a place where they won't do any damage to any of the neighbors," says Parks and Recreation Commissioner Mauro Tucci.

Spraying began at dusk and will continue for five nights in an attempt to keep the birds away.
