TOMS RIVER - A popular airline carrier is accused of adding insult to injury for a Toms River family still recovering from Sandy.

Laurie Barbosa and her husband tell Kane In Your Corner that they were set to take a flight on Spirit Airlines to Florida just days after Sandy hit.

Barbosa says their Toms River home was badly flooded, and they had to cancel the trip.

But rather than offer a refund, Barbosa and her husband allege that Spirit Airlines charged her a $279 cancellation fee and insisted that she had to re-book the flight and complete the trip within 30 days.

Barbosa says the airline also said if they didn't follow the guidelines, they would forfeit their entire fare of nearly $800.

The Barbosas are among several New Jersey families who have reached out to Kane In Your Corner with similar complaints about the airline.

In response to the investigation, a Spirit Airlines representative reached out to Kane In Your Corner saying, "Our hearts go out to everyone affected by Hurricane Sandy. If you could send me information on the customers who have contacted you, we would be happy to reach out to them to assist."
