Police: Man refused to dismantle large fireworks display (7/6/15)

SPARTA - A man arrested for allegedly refusing to dismantle an elaborate fireworks display at his home says he's been doing it for 15 years without any issue.

Sparta police responded to the home of Bujar Xhudo this past Fourth of July and asked him to dismantle the display that featured about 100 fireworks wired to a controller.

Sparta Police Chief Ernest Reigstad says the department received a concerned call about the fireworks.

"People, I think, looked at this and said this was a recipe for disaster. There was a large amount of concern," says Chief Reigstad.

Xhudo allegedly refused to listen to the officers and said that he would pay the fine instead and continue the show for his neighbors. Fireworks are illegal in New Jersey, so Xhudo was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of fireworks.

Xhudo claims he's been putting on the show for years and has never had an issue with continuing the show.

He says his children set up the fireworks electronically, not by hand, and take all the proper safety precautions.

"I love my show," he says. "I am proud to be American. I just couldn't understand why I had to stop right there."

The fire department eventually came and dismantled the display. The fireworks were taken to the Sparta Police Station. State police will eventually come to confiscate them.
