SOUTH ORANGE - A South Orange woman says that she has Apple iPhone’s Siri to thank for driving off an attacker insider her home.

The attack happened Feb. 22 around 10:15 a.m. Cecilia Cranko says that she was on the third floor of her home on Ward Place when she heard noises coming from one of the lower floors.

When she went to investigate the noise, she says that she was confronted and attacked by a man she did not know inside her home.

“He grabbed me by the hair, pulled me back and just started hitting me in the head,” Cranko says.

She says that she turned and ran, but he followed her.

“He pushed me and I sent straight into the wall,” Cranko says. There is a large dent in the wall to show the impact of the blow.

“I went down and he was on top of me, just hitting me in the head,” she says. “As soon as he went for my pants, I just lost it. I started screaming. That’s when I screamed to my phone for Siri to call 911."

Cranko says that that’s when the suspect ran off.

She says that after the attack she found several of her televisions and children’s gaming consoles lined up by the back door, ready to be stolen.

Police say the man apparently gained entrance through a rear sliding glass door. The lock was broken.

Cranko says that she now has all her windows boarded up and her security system on.

“Physically I’m getting better. Mentally it'll take a long time for me to feel safe again,” she says.

Police say the suspect appeared to be in his 30s. He is about 5 feet 9 inches to 6 feet tall and was wearing a black hoodie. Investigators released a sketch of the suspect and are hoping that the public recognizes him.

Anyone who night have any information about the attack is asked to call Detective Lt. Brian McGuire at 973-763-3000 ext. 7788.
