SOUTH BRUNSWICK - To mark the Hindu Festival of Lights, some school districts in New Jersey had the day off.

Diwali is one of the biggest holidays on the Hindu calendar. South Brunswick schools are leading the trend by observing the holiday.

Deven Patel lobbied for the day off, noting that all parts of India celebrate Diwali. Patel has lights up on his house for the festival of lights, along with special symbols to mark the holiday.

The large South Asian community is why Superintendent Gary McCartney worked to make Diwali a day off, only the second district in New Jersey to do so. South Brunswick has also recognized several Muslim holidays and school officials say they will be standard days off for the future.
