SOUTH BRUNSWICK - The South Brunswick Police Department has released the name of a teenage girl who was killed in a New Year's Day crash on a central New Jersey highway.
Blanca Azucena Hernandez Vargas, 13, of Toms River, was one of eight people hurt in the two-vehicle accident on Route 1 in South Brunswick. She died late Saturday at a hospital.
Two other people injured in the crash remained hospitalized Monday.
Cirilo Velazquez-Roja, 21, remains in critical condition at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. Ilda Hernandez, 21, has been upgraded to stable condition.
The other five patients were treated at hospitals and have since been released.
Authorities say a car driven by the teen's 27-year-old brother and a minivan collided around 5:15 a.m. Friday on Route 1 near Deans Lane.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, but authorities say the car's driver may have been distracted by a cellphone.
