EDISON - Some Somerset County residents are wondering how safe they will be as the county considers a plan to merge its 19 police departments. North Plainfield Police Chief William Parenti supports the idea as a way to save money. He says the plan would save towns $18 million each year. It could also mean savings for taxpayers. Police positions would be cut by not replacing retiring officers.

Police unions in the county say they are questioning just how much money will be saved.
