EDISON - According to the Fort Drum public affairs department, a soldier from Hopatcong was killed in Afghanistan yesterday.

Officials say Sgt. Michael D. Kirspel, Jr., 23, died from wounds sustained in an improvised explosive device attack. He was part of the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division

Sgt. Kirspel was deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in the spring of this year.
