EDISON - Drivers in parts of New Jersey are facing treacherous driving conditions today after freezing rain and ice pelted the state.

Transportation department spokesman Joe Dee said about 500 salt spreaders are tackling ice in the northern and central parts of the state.

State Police Sgt. Julian Castellanos said earlier today that troopers have responded to 360 motor vehicle accidents and 615 calls for assistance since 10:30 p.m. Monday.

Many schools were closed or had a late start today and government offices were delayed by two hours.
