NEWARK - The Newark skyline will be changing, after the city's first high rise project in more than 50 years broke ground Friday.
Basketball superstar and Newark native Shaquille O'Neal, Mayor Cory Booker and other city and county leaders wear there to mark the milestone.
The project, called One Riverview at Rector Street, will transform a building orginally built in 1860. The structure served for decades as a malt house for Ballentine Brewing and most recently was Science High School.
Shaq says his hometown still holds a special place in his heart and he felt compelled to get involved in the project. "My mother and father always taught me that if I became successful, to give back," he says. "So I wanted to do my part and help beautify Newark."
The new building will feature 169 apartment units.
