PARAMUS - A local veterans home received a special visit Monday from a top military leader.

Sgt. Maj. Bryan Battaglia paid a visit to residents of the Paramus Veterans Home.

The facility cares for more than 300 vets from World War II, Korea and Vietnam.

The Marine is the country's highest-ranking noncommissioned military officer and an advisor to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Battaglia says he has learned a lot from the vets over the years. "They have stories and history and they're a big reason why we're here and why we're a free country today," he says. "So we always have something to learn from our elders."

The Paramus Veterans Home is one of three facilities of its kind in New Jersey. The average age of the residents there is 85.
