CEDAR GROVE - Bad storms that crossed the Garden State caused a lot of damage in their wake and left thousands of residents without power.
Storm clouds gathered over Essex and Union counties for most of the afternoon. When the clouds finally burst, the area saw heavy rain, wind and hail. Damage reports came in from South Orange and Verona, and there was severe flooding in Newark.
The storm also caused a large tree to uproot in Cedar Grove, striking three parked cars and bringing down wires.
Mucio Pinto says that he was blocked from his front yard because the tree was across his property.
“The tree was beautiful and strong, but the wind was strong,” he says. “[The storm] came across, and it was all black.”
Other areas of the state were also affected by the storm. Areas like Red Bank and Oceanport saw flooding.
The storms also caused more trees to come down in Freehold and Marlboro.
Thousands of residents across the state were left in the dark after the storm caused power outages. By Friday night, there were still nearly 8,000 customers without power.
Utility crews are expected to work through the night to make repairs.
