WHITEHOUSE - Services will be held today for a firefighter with the New Jersey Forest Fire Service who was killed in the line of duty last week.

Jeffrey Scheurer was working along Route 629 in Clinton Township Thursday when he struck by a car and killed during a controlled burn. Authorities say the 35-year-old Raritan Township resident was also a member of the Readington Volunteer Fire Company.

The county prosecutor's office says the preliminary investigation indicates heavy smoke associated with the controlled burn may have reduced visibility when the wind shifted and contributed to the accident.

A viewing will be held at the Kearns Funeral Home in Whitehouse today from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The funeral is scheduled for tomorrow morning at 10 a.m.
