ROCKLEIGH - A shelter for abused senior citizens is now open in Bergen County, and it is the first of its kind in New Jersey.
SeniorHaven is run by the Jewish Home Family in Rockleigh. The shelter provides rooms at that location or partner sites for senior citizens who are being abused.
Officials say elder-abuse is extremely under reported and ranges from financial to physical abuse.
SeniorHaven will provide free housing for seniors for up to 120 days. The shelter will also make plans with the senior about where they can go afterward.
There are 14 similar types of shelters across the country. More information can be found at the Jewish Home Family website.
