NEW JERSEY - State Senate President Steve Sweeney (D-West Deptford) is refusing to apologize for the harsh words he aimed at Gov. Chris Christie (R-N.J.) this past weekend.

Sweeney later admitted he probably could have used softer language in a published interview he did with a Star-Ledger reporter, but refuses to apologize for calling the governor a "punk," among other names.

Sweeney says that his emotional response came from seeing Christie cut programs for children and the disabled from the budget.

"Understand, this isn't like he didn't know what he was doing.  He sat down and consciously drew a line through these things, and it got very personal for me," Sweeney said.

Christie's staff released a statement today saying, "The governor believes the language used was inappropriate and disrespectful to the office, but he continues to stand ready to work with Sen. Sweeney and the Legislature."
