WASHINGTON - New Jersey’s senior U.S. senator has announced his engagement to his girlfriend of more than a year.
Sen. Robert Menendez, 59, proposed to Alicia Mucci on Monday in the Capitol Rotunda, according to the senator's office.
The couple attended a congressional holiday ball at the White House and then went out with friends, according to reports.
Fellow senators tweeted congratulatory notes on Tuesday.
Menendez, who has two children, divorced in 2005 after a 29-year marriage. His office says he met Mucci more than a year ago at a fundraiser.
Mucci is from Bergen County and manages real estate investments.
The New Jersey Democrat is chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
