EDISON - A New Jersey lawmaker is planning to introduce a bill to legalize the recreational use of marijuana in the state.

News 12 sat down with Sen. Nicholas Scutari to discuss his plans. He says his bill would allow legal marijuana to be grown and sold here, using a Colorado-style system where it is regulated and heavily taxed.

Gov. Chris Christie has made it clear that he does not want such a system in the state. Scutari says that when voters realize millions, if not billions, of dollars have been spent on a "failed" drug war, they will be crying out for Christie to sign the marijuana legislation.

Voters in Colorado and Washington state made recreational marijuana use legal.

New Jersey currently allows medical marijuana under tight restrictions, and public pushback has made it difficult to establish distribution and growth centers.
