WASHINGTON - US Sen. Cory Booker made an unprecedented move and said that he cannot support Sen. Jeff Sessions, President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for U.S. attorney general because his conscience won’t allow it.

Sen. Booker says that while he and Sen. Sessions have a mutual respect for each other, he cannot endorse the senator from Alabama because Sessions’s records show he will not fight for the rights of minorities, women, the LGBT community or immigrants.

"Patriotism is love of country and love of country demands we love all of our citizens, even the most marginalized,” Sen. Booker said while testifying in Washington Wednesday.

Some political analysts say that Sen. Booker’s testimony was more of a symbolic protest and say that it may be a way to increase his national profile.

"Cory Booker has not really made much of a secret of the fact that he wants to be president,” says Fairleigh Dickinson political science professor Dan Cassion. “There's a reason that he didn't want to run for governor, because that's kind of a dead-end job like Chris Christie has found out."

Republican leaders have said that their majority will push Sen. Sessions despite all the protests.
