NEWARK - An illegal immigrant from Nigeria who allegedly used a dead man's name to work as an airport security supervisor in New Jersey the past 20 years has pleaded not guilty to identity theft.
Bimbo Olumuyiwa Oyewole made an initial court appearance by video conference this afternoon in state court in Newark, a day after he was arrested. The only time he spoke was to say "yes" when the judge asked him if he lived in Elizabeth.
Officials say Oyewole used the identity of murder victim Jerry Thomas to hide his status as an illegal immigrant from Nigeria. They say they have no evidence that he concealed his real identity for any other reason. The 54-year-old faces charges including identity theft.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey says he had passed background checks. It says he used the name Jerry Thomas since 1992, the year Thomas was killed in New York City.
