LONG BRANCH - The search for a missing teenager who disappeared Sunday night in the ocean off Long Branch has been called off. Family and friends say the unidentified 17-year-old male from Putnam County went under near Melrose Terrace and Ocean Avenue, and he never came up for air. The swimmer was reported missing yesterday at 5:41 p.m. After searching for several hours, the Coast Guard dispatched a cutter and crew to the area at around 10 p.m. yesterday. Authorities say the ship remained in the vicinity overnight to assist in an early morning search. Lifeguards will get back in the water tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. to resume the search for his body.
