Search called off for missing boater in Barnegat Bay

BARNEGAT LIGHT - According to state police, the search for a 25-year-old man who fell off a speed boat as it traveled in the Barnegat Bay Saturday has been called off.

Officials say they will determine Tuesday morning whether or not to resume the search.

Authorities say the man was one of four people aboard the 23-foot boat when it hit a wake in the bay's popular Tices Shoal section at around 6 p.m.

The man, who wasn't wearing a life jacket, and another passenger with him were tossed into the water.

The other passenger was quickly pulled from the water by the boat's driver, but the missing man never resurfaced.

Emergency crews from the Coast Guard, state police and other local agencies immediately began looking for the man in the waters off Island Beach State Park, but later suspended their search due to darkness. They then resumed it shortly after dawn on Sunday.

Officials have cautioned boaters to always wear life jackets and stay away from the edges of their vessel.
