BAY HEAD - Students at Bay Head Elementary are back in their familiar school building after Sandy left the school’s basement and several classrooms completely submerged in floodwaters.
Students in kindergarten through eighth grade have spent the last few months at a school in Point Pleasant Beach.
Immediately following the storm, only the top of the school’s playground was visible. Water nearly reached the ceiling in the basement. The school’s gym, cafeteria, and classrooms that were used for Spanish, art and music classes were badly damaged.
Only the upstairs of Bay Head Elementary is usable right now and officials say it will be more than a year before the downstairs of the school is rebuilt. Two trailers have been brought in to house those special classrooms.
Parents, students and teachers are relieved to be back in their building, signaling a return to normalcy for families still struggling to recovery after Sandy.
Attendance has been 100 percent since Sandy both at the alternate location in Point Pleasant Beach and at Bay Head Elementary.
