METUCHEN - Many New Jersey students hit the books this Presidents Day on what is typically a school holiday, as districts are attempting to make up for an abundance of snow days.

In Metuchen, students and teachers from elementary to high school headed to class instead of sleeping in on a long weekend. The district has five snow days to make up after what's turning out to be a difficult winter.

Parents say it's frustrating, especially those who made plans for the weekend. But most say they understand it is is what needs to be done.

"We have to make it up," says Maggie Slowik. "I don't want my son to miss out on anything."

The parents say they know of some families whose students did not make it to school today because of previously made plans, and say schools seem to be understanding.
