Sandy shaping up to be priciest storm ever for leisure boaters

PARLIN - Recreational boating industry experts believe that at least 25,000 New Jersey leisure boats were damaged or lost during Sandy.

At Morgan Marina in Parlin, boats are piled up on top of one another like toys. Some are nearly submerged in the Cheesequake River, while dozens of others are stranded.

Boat-US, the largest boat owners group in the country, says the storm damaged more than 65,000 boats from Florida to Massachusetts, and as far west as the Great Lakes.

In total, the damage adds up to an astounding $650 million.

Only New York suffered more leisure boat losses than New Jersey. Approximately 32,000 boats were lost or damaged there, totaling more than $324 million in damages.

Because leisure boats are recreational in nature, approximately half of these boats were uninsured, according to Boat-US.
