KEANSBURG - Homeowners are planning rebuilding projects now that Gov. Chris Christie has backed new FEMA elevation guidelines for homes in high-risk flood areas.
One homeowner in Keansburg plans to lift his house by 7 feet and put in an all new foundation in an effort to protect it from the next storm.
In Keansburg, the flood elevation has changed to 17 feet plus 1 foot above sea level. By building up foundations, homeowners expect to get a savings of $200 on flood insurance bills that cost $400 last year.
The state adopted new FEMA elevation levels in hope of avoiding the billions of dollars in losses caused by Sandy.
