SALEM - A Salem County man is heading to Washington, D.C. to attend Donald Trump’s presidential inauguration, a tradition he had held since 1941.

B. Harold Smick, of Salem, was 15 years old when he attended his first presidential inauguration, for President Franklin D. Roosevelt. It was Roosevelt’s third inaugural address. He’s attended every inauguration since.

“His voice was enough to bring us out of the greatest depression we ever had,” Smick says.

But the 91-year-old says that President John F. Kennedy gave the most energizing and inspirational speech.

Smick’s home is filled with presidential memorabilia. Smick even has a collection of autographs from every president, including George Washington.

“You just feel like you’re on cloud nine,” he says about attending the inaugurations. “It’s historic, and I love history.”

Smick says that he is a Democrat and voted for Hillary Clinton. While some Democrats have chosen to boycott Trump’s inauguration, Smick says he would not dream of it.

"It's my obligation to be there. I really think people should be required to vote,” he says.

Smick says that he is making a point to support the incoming 45th President Donald Trump.

“I think he's different,” Smick says. “He's quite a character, and I pray he does a good job.”

He will head to Washington Friday morning to attend the ceremony with his eldest daughter.
