HACKENSACK - A truck driver charged in the death of a Waldwick police officer has pleaded not guilty to vehicular homicide.

Ryon Cumberbatch made an initial court appearance in Hackensack on Monday. Authorities say the 28-year-old Brooklyn resident was driving an 18-wheeler on Route 17 in Waldwick early Thursday when he slammed into an unmarked police car parked on the side of the road.

Waldwick Police Officer Christopher Goodell, who was watching for speeders, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Cumberbatch only spoke during the brief hearing Monday to say he understood the charge. His attorney said they wouldn't comment out of respect for Goodell's family.
