PISCATAWAY - About 200 college students from Rutgers University volunteered today to assist in the Superstorm Sandy cleanup effort along the shore.

Participating students in the Serve the Shore program headed down to Island Beach State Park just south of Seaside Park to clean up the area. Nearly six months since the storm pounded the coast, many beaches on the Jersey Shore are still littered with debris.

Serve the Shore is one of several community service events sponsored by the Rutgers Student Volunteer Council. The volunteering effort was a collaboration between Rutgers University and a not-for-profit called All In that was started by Essex County native Andrea Geroldi.

"When you have students like this coming out [to volunteer], it reminds you how great New jersey is," said Geroldi.

The volunteering effort is just one of three major projects lined up for Rutgers students over the next several months.
