NEW BRUNSWICK - Rutgers University says that a report stating the amount of money the school collected in parking fines is misleading.

A report by said that Rutgers students paid nearly $5 million a year in parking fines in 2014 and 2015. According to the report, the school issued about 90,000 parking tickets last year, which works out to more than five per driver on campus.

A spokesperson for the university tells News 12 New Jersey that the school only collected just over $1 million in fines and penalties. First time offenders are usually granted a warning and have the tickets dismissed, according to the university.

Jack Molenaar, head of Rutgers' transportation department, told that the high number of tickets can be blamed on the layout of the school's five separate campuses.

The majority of the tickets were for drivers who didn't have permits.

The Associated Press wire services contributed to this report.
