NEWARK - A Rutgers University student is dead and a former student is hospitalized after a shooting near the Newark campus, and police are looking for suspects in the case.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office says student Shani Patel, 21, of Toms River, was fatally shot in an off-campus apartment near Central Avenue and Halsey Street around 10 p.m. Sunday. Patel's roommate, a 23-year-old graduate of Rutgers University whom authorities haven't identified, was also shot.
During the investigation, police found what appeared to be a gun close to the scene. Authorities haven't said whether the weapon was used in the crime or disclosed any information about the weapon.
The school's chancellor sent an email to students, informing them about the shooting. Some students say they no longer plan to take night classes and they feel uneasy about the shooting.
Authorities have no suspects in the case at this time and no motive is known.
Essex County Crime Stoppers is offering up to $10,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction. Anyone who might have any knowledge about the crime is urged to contact police.
The shooting marks the 25th homicide of the year in Newark, according to police statistics.
