NEW BRUNSWICK - Despite claims from former players that she was an abusive coach, Rutgers' new Athletic Director Julie Hermann says she won't resign.

In an interview yesterday, Hermann denied that she was abusive to her players when she coached women's volleyball at the University of Tennessee. In 1996, her team sent a letter to the school, accusing Hermann of being an abusive coach. Hermann quit the following year and says while she was an intense coach, she never abused her team.

Hermann was hired to replace Tim Perneti after he was fired for the way he handled the Mike Rice scandal. Rice, the men's basketball coach, was caught on video verbally assaulting his players and throwing basketballs at them.

Students say they're embarrassed the school didn't know about this beforehand, but University President Robert Barchi insists Hermann was chosen after an exhaustive screening process. Hermann's first day as athletic director is June 17.
