Rutgers' Eric LeGrand is paralyzed from neck down

NEW BRUNSWICK - A Rutgers player injured making a tackle on a kickoff return Saturday sustained a neck injury that has left him paralyzed below the neck.

Rutgers coach Greg Schiano says defensive tackle Eric LeGrand, of Avenel, is resting in the intensive care unit at Hackensack University Medical Center and will remain there for the near future.

The 6-foot-2, 275-pound junior had emergency surgery overnight to stabilize his spine.

Schiano, who had tears in his eyes during his press conference following Rutgers 23-20 overtime win over Army, talked to his team around noon on Sunday.
