Rutgers enrolls record number of freshmen

NEW BRUNSWICK - (AP) - Rutgers University is teeming with arecord number of freshmen, up 3 percent from last year.

Classes begin for the 7,300 first-year students on Wednesday.They come from about 100 countries and 39 states. About one-thirdare from families in which neither parent has a four-year collegedegree.

There will be about 56,400 undergraduate and graduate studentsthis fall at the main campuses in New Brunswick and Piscataway, andat the smaller campuses in Newark and Camden.

Officials handed out free scarlet T-shirts on Monday. Studentswill be urged to wear them when the Rutgers football team playsNorfolk State on Thursday night.
