ROXBURY - Residents of Roxbury celebrated the state takeover of the Fenimore Landfill on Thursday night.

The yearlong battle with the landfill's owners crossed a major hurdle Wednesday when the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) took control of the landfill to perform necessary remediation work.

News 12 New Jersey's Walt Kane helped expose numerous problems with a plan to redevelop the old landfill. The project was releasing dangerous and ever-increasing levels of hydrogen sulfide, a toxic gas linked to respiratory problems.

Roxbury resident Stephen Denis says, "It basically shows when people come together in focus you can move mountains."

DEP officials say they plan to seal part of the landfill with a concrete-like barrier. The takeover allows the agency to carry out the odor abatement project, but the owners will retain control of the landfill.
