NEWARK - A section of Route 21 in Newark had to be shut down following an early morning tanker truck explosion that crippled the morning commute Thursday.

The tanker, which was carrying about 8,500 gallons of gasoline, burst into flames after colliding with a car. The crash happened on McCarter Highway near Murray Street and adjacent to Amtrak's Northeast Corridor rail line at around 1:30 a.m.

The city's fire department says no one was injured.

Route 21 has since reopened.
