SANDY HOOK - The discovery of artifacts from the 18th century has led to an archaeological dig at the Jersey Shore.
Items believed to be from around the time of the Revolutionary War were found near a lighthouse on Sandy Hook. Archaeologists have found historic nails, musket balls, tobacco pipes, buttons to uniforms, a brass plate from a musket and even old foundation walls from a lighthouse keeper’s home.
All of the items are being collected and cataloged. Experts say the items will help to shed light about the Revolution and how occupation of Sandy Hook was key to controlling the New York Harbor.
This project is being led by a professor from Monmouth University.
