ROXBURY - A retired New Jersey police officer was critically injured in an accident during an annual bike ride that honors officers killed in the line of duty.

Roxbury police say Joseph Franklin was hospitalized in critical condition at Morristown Medical Center Tuesday after he was injured while riding in the Police Unity Tour.

Few details about the accident have been released, but the Far Hills Police Department tells News 12 New Jersey that the accident happened in their jurisdiction Monday afternoon near Route 202 and Fox Hunt Court.

The accident is under investigation in Far Hills.

A statement posted on the Roxbury police Facebook page said, “We ask that you keep Retired Lt. Joe Franklin in your thoughts. While participating in the Police Unity Tour yesterday he sustained serious injuries from an accident while on his bike. Our thoughts are with his family and friends. We will pray for you Lt. Franklin.”

Dozens of people posted under the message offering their thoughts, prayers and well wishes.

Hundreds of officers are taking part in the 320-mile bike ride, a four-day event that ends at the National Law Enforcement Officer's Memorial and Museum in Washington. Money raised through the ride goes to the memorial's fund.
