MAHWAH - Plans for a controversial shopping mall in Mahwah are entering the final phases, despite objections from local residents.

Bill Koyak is concerned about extra traffic and noise, once the new shopping center, called the Mahwah Crossroads, is built behind his house. "I think progress within the township is great," he says. "The only thing I'm concerned about is traffic. As long as they can reduce traffic flow, I'm all for it."

The project would develop hundreds of acres of vacant land into stores, restaurants, and a movie theater. Nearby residents still have unanswered questions.

Mayor Bill Laforet says he has a plan to deal with increased traffic. "We are in talks right now with the DOT of both New York and New Jersey to remediate the existing traffic." The plans will include adjusting traffic patterns and the timing of traffic lights.

Mahwah officials will soon look for retailers to occupy the mall but say construction is still a year away.
