BERGEN COUNTY - Residents of the Garden State are doing everything they can to find relief from the heat.

Emergency rooms are treating huge numbers of people for heat-related illnesses. Many earn a living by working outside.

"Before noon and after sunset are the best times to be outside," says Dr. Hasmig Jinivizian of Valley Hospital. "If you're going to be out, make sure to wear loose-fitting clothing, hats, and sunblock SPF 15 or higher."

Those who are trying to beat the heat headed to community pools like the Graydon Pool in Ridgewood. Parents there told News 12 New Jersey they try to keep the kids hydrated, and when they are out of the pool, they head for the shade.
