BAYONNE - People who live in the shadows of the Bayonne Bridge say that they are ready for construction around the bridge to be completed.

Construction to raise the bridge has been going on for the last three years and the project won’t be totally finished until 2019.

Residents say their homes and property have been damaged by the construction, and all the noise has become a nuisance.

“Sometimes you get hammering, sometimes you get machinery moving,” says resident Brian Cotter.

Cotter says that he has had to replace cracked cement on his front steps, walls and patio. He says that he has even had to repair his pool and air conditioners because of the construction.

"They’re filled with sediment from the bridge. So I put in a claim for that and my patio,” Cotter says.

The Port Authority has started to pay for some of Cotter’s claims, and has even provided many homeowners with new windows.

The agency says that the bridge project should be completed on time. Two lanes on the newly completed upper deck of the bridge were opened to traffic Monday.

Work should begin soon to demolish the lower deck of the bridge.

The bridge is being raised to allow very large cargo ships to pass underneath, which will allow more ships to come into New Jersey’s ports.
