PATERSON - Community leaders in Paterson are calling for action to clean up a contaminated park that has been closed for more than a year.

Barbour Park is located along Broadway, between Rosa Parks Boulevard and Carroll Street. For the last year, it has been off limits because the soil is contaminated with lead and other pollutants.

The city has appropriated money for the cleanup, but local residents say it's taking too long.

"This is one of the few parks in this area," says community leader Teddy Martinez. "We have pocket parks all over the city. But this is one of the biggest parks. It seems like they refuse to put money into it."

Residents say the park has become an eyesore and a hot-bed for drug dealers.

City leaders say they plan to put the soil removal project out for bid, but it's unclear when the cleanup will begin.
