Residents blame flooding on Bayonne Bridge project

BAYONNE - Homeowners say a bridge project by the Port Authority is to blame for flooding in their Bayonne homes.

Neighbors on Fifth Street say they awoke Saturday morning to find their basements filled with several feet of water. They say the problem can be traced to the Port Authority's Bayonne Bridge reconstruction project.

A pair of storm drains at what used to be the end of the street were covered over when the project started, and residents say this is not the first time that flooding has occurred. The Bayonne Fire Department pumped out the excess water from the homes, but residents say they still have a big mess to clean up.

A Port Authority spokesman says the sewer lines are being pumped out and a bypass system will allow people to use their water.

Cleaning crews in the neighborhood say they are trying to determine the cause of the flooding.
