EDISON - Republican Senate candidate Steve Lonegan is addressing an issue over a tweet that some say was offensive.

The tweet, sent out by one of Lonegan's staffers, included a map of the city of Newark with hand-drawn labels for various parts of town. The sections included West Africa, the Middle East, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

"Some silly tweet about some dopey map was sent out via my campaign Twitter account without my authorization," Lonegan said. "And when we realized what it was, it was taken down immediately. It was more childish than it had any intention of being racist."

The tweet was taken down after about 10 minutes.

Newark Mayor Cory Booker, who is running against Lonegan as a Democrat, says the tweet was inappropriate and offensive.
