CLIFTON - Republican Nutley commissioner and former law enforcement officer Steve Rogers has announced that he will enter the New Jersey gubernatorial race.

“I’m a Republican, however I owe no one anything. I only owe the people,” Rogers says.

Rogers recently worked on President-elect Donald Trump’s election campaign as a security advisor.

"I think it would be great to have a Republican governor who worked on the campaign who had the ear of the next president,” he says.

Rogers says that he would do away with the gas tax if he is elected. He says that he will also treat drug addicts as if it was a mental health issue but will prosecute drug dealers and suppliers as terrorists.

"Anyone who distributes, manufactures and sells narcotics in the state of New Jersey after I become governor, they're going to be classified as terrorists because that money that they're getting off the street, a lot of that is financing terrorist organizations,” he says.

Rogers is the eighth person to declare a fun for New Jersey governor. He will make an official announcement at the Madison Hotel in Morristown Thursday at 12 p.m.
