HAMILTON - A New Jersey man who pioneered a sex-offender notification law in honor of his young daughter is reportedly running for state office.

Sources told The Times of Trenton Richard Kanka will seek the Republican nomination to challenge Democratic Sen. Linda Greenstein in the newly redrawn 14th Legislative District.

An announcement is scheduled for Tuesday at a diner in Hamilton.

Kanka has served on the Hamilton school board since April. His 7-year-old daughter, Megan, was raped and murdered nearly 17 years ago by a convicted sex offender who had moved into the neighborhood.

Kanka and his wife Maureen pressed for a law to require convicted sex offenders to register with police, and for neighbors to be notified.

AP wire services contributed to this report.
