MIDDLETOWN - The Muslim community of Middletown is shocked after it was revealed that the leader of the Islamic Center of Monmouth County has been the subject of an NYPD investigation. According to a report, Sheikh Reda Shata has been working as a liaison between Muslims and the authorities following Sept. 11, and he even had dinner with New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.All the while, the report says, the NYPD had an undercover agent monitoring Shata."It's not fair for him, whatever they say about him," says Mohammed el-Sayed, of Holmdel.Shata, who lives near his mosque in Middletown, has declined to comment for the story.
