NEWARK - Between June 1 and Aug. 31, 35 people have been killed in Newark, making it the deadliest summer since 1990, according to statistics cited in an NJ.com report.
The report says targeted shootings and drug-related turf battles have fueled the violence in New Jersey's largest city.
Despite the violent summer, Newark saw an overall drop in violent crimes over the past four years.
