Report: Leaders discussed ouster of New Jersey Assembly speaker

TRENTON - A New Jersey Democratic party official says leaders have discussed the possibility of ousting the speaker of the Assembly.

Bergen County Democratic Party Chairman Lou Stellato tells The Record newspaper that George Norcross approached him last week and asked if he'd support removing Assembly Speaker Vincent Prieto. Prieto has blocked a takeover of Atlantic City that's backed by Norcross, Gov. Chris Christie and Senate President Stephen Sweeney.

Norcross declined to discuss the conversation. But he says discontent with Prieto's leadership spans the state and started with a plan to expand casinos in northern New Jersey. He says Prieto's actions have caused people to question his leadership.

Prieto says he has the support of the majority of the Democratic caucus.
