READINGTON TOWNSHIP - Local politicians are trying to seize a small airport in Hunterdon County that has been family-owned for years.

Solberg Airport has been operated by the Solberg family for more than 70 years.

The township committee passed an ordinance Wednesday approving the use of eminent domain to take the airport property away, despite overwhelming opposition from residents.

Attorney Wayne Fox says the council went ahead with the move despite hundreds showing up in opposition.

"They basically got a lot of people very aggravated last night,” he says.

The Belle Mead attorney says he has been following the land battle for years.

The Solberg family declined to speak about the matter, citing pending litigation.

Mayor Julia Allen did not respond to an email seeking comment.

Solberg Airport is well-known as the home of the annual Festival of Ballooning.
